The River Irk travels under Middleton town centre for around 500m in a couple of parallel concrete box culverts.
The River Calder flows through Cornholme in a few stone culverts, we had a look at the first one which was around 650m in length.

A new storm relief complex in Trafford Park, 3 detention tanks and 700m of sewer were built to stop frequent spills to the Ship Canal.
A couple of large shafts linked by tunnels to the Eccles Sewage Works then onto an outfall at the Manchester Ship Canal. The system will intercept spills that used to end up in the Salt Eye Brook for storage and treatment or screening and dumping in the larger river.
In the hills above Dovestone Reservoir this culvert was built to divert the water of the Greenfield brook.
